Another honor crime

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051228/ap_on_re_as/pakistan_honor_killings

"MULTAN, Pakistan - Nazir Ahmed appears calm and unrepentant as he recounts how he slit the throats of his three young daughters and their 25-year old stepsister to salvage his family's "honor" — a crime that shocked Pakistan. The 40-year old laborer, speaking to The Associated Press in police detention as he was being shifted to prison, confessed to just one regret — that he didn't murder the stepsister's alleged lover too.
.....
.Bibi (the wife) recounted how she was woken by a shriek as Ahmed put his hand to the mouth of his stepdaughter Muqadas and cut her throat with a machete. Bibi looked helplessly on from the corner of the room as he then killed the three girls — Bano, 8, Sumaira, 7, and Humaira, 4 — pausing between the slayings to brandish the bloodstained knife at his wife, warning her not to intervene or raise alarm."I was shivering with fear. I did not know how to save my daughters,"

"I thought the younger girls would do what their eldest sister had done, so they should be eliminated," he said, his hands cuffed, his face unshaven. ....Despite Ahmed's contention that Muqadas had committed adultery — a claim made by her husband — the rights commission reported that according to local people, Muqadas had fled her husband because he had abused her and forced her to work in a brick-making factory....."

When is this going to stop? How long do we have to keep hearing of such horror stories. The daughter was bused by her husband, and her salvation was that her dad slit her throat along with her 3 sisters. Enough is enough. And we question the use of death panelty? I'd love to see him die slowely, what a pig.

I could not agree more with you .. he should be put to death for this crime .. and like he took their lives, his should be taken as well .. maybe this way; others will think before they act ..

My god! they are sending us back to the days before Islam, when only having a daughter was a disgrace .. just tell me how is this different from those days?

This is really sad .. and disgusting

Oh, this is awful. I wonder is Western readers will know the difference between Pakistan and Jordan?

At least Pakistanis were shocked, instead of in agreement.

I am also sick that a widow must marry her husband's brother. Where does that tradition come from? Ancient Jews?

this guy is sick, and i mean mentally sick. the fact that he killed his other 3 daughters to save them from doing what their older sister did shows he's been listening to some voice in his head

To tell u the truth, I had nightmares about what I read, and the vision of those 3 little daughters kept haunting me for a while.

So much corruption there that I doubt justice is gonna be served. a couple of years ago, a group rape occured in pakistan, and still, no justice yet.

I think the tradition is not bad after all, trying to help the widow of a brother, allthough this still can be done without marrying her.

Do u think that there is a tremindous pressure from society on that man? I'm not trying to give him exceuses, but I think that as long as society is harsh when it comes to honor, many men will endup losing their mind and doing such crimes. Dude, I really don't think there is a hope in the near future for women in pakistan (and few in jordan) because of such pressure.

Actually, I think that this is a big missconception to attach honor crimes to islam, and many people fail to draw the line between the two. In jordan, palestine and egypt, honor crimes are in both, christian and islamic families. I believe that it is a tribal thing, like in pakistan. India also have that crimes when a lower class person loves a person from a higher class.

There must be something done to prevent against honor crimes, and that should be on the cultural front. In islam, it never allows killing a person can kill his daughters or sisters for suspecting adultery. However there is a clear punishment depending on the maritial status, and there is a condition of 4 witnesses who saw the exact act of sex (and it has to be sex, not oral and not touching only)

Hamzeh, I wasn't clear. We know Jordan is light years ahead of Pakistan on this issue, but some Western readers may not.

If this happened in Jordan, who knows if he would live through his first night in prison.

Bo3...very noble for a brother to help a widow or find her a suitable husband, but marrying her? That would be suffering the effects of two deaths, especially with a man of this character.
